The last game of the season at Chestnut Avenue provided the spectators with a very competitive clash between two good teams on the night. If only the Woods had put in similar appearances earlier in the season, then they would have finished a lot higher up the table!

Gez Reilly again put out a young team, including some players who will still be eligible next season, and this augers well for the future. It was only the final ball that let them down, and two sucker punches that gave Wokingham their goals.

The first goalmouth action occurred in the 11th minute when skipper Jamie Tompkins cleared off the line, and in the melee that followed keeper Keiron Sills managed to hang onto the ball.

Seven minutes later, after some brilliant footwork by young Romane Walker, the Wokingham keeper made a great stop from his shot. Following that save, Wokingham quickly attacked the Woods, and  when the defence halted the move and played a back pass to the keeper, disaster struck. As Keiron Sills attempted to kick the ball clear, it bobbled over his foot and he sliced it straight to Shane Cooper-Clark, who tapped home.

On 40 minutes Keiron made a fine save, tipping over a good effort from Cooper-Clark, whilst at the other end Danny Briggs fired over after another mazy run from Romane Walker.

The second half was an end-to-end affair, with both teams going all out for a goal. Sam Holland drove one over the bar and Emile Price shot straight at the keeper, before Wokingham suddenly broke out of defence down the Woods right. After an initial shot had been blocked, the ball fell to Jack Ingram, who fired low past a helpless goalie to make it 2-0.

Still the Woods wouldn’t lie down, and Romane Walker wasn’t getting any luck when after another dribble through the defence, his shot was deflected for a corner. The last effort saw substitute Jack Dodds bring out a super save by the Wokingham keeper five minutes from time.

Man of the Match: Romane Walker.
